Copyright:  Does it really matter anyway?

The Scenario:

Your best friend is a singer-songwriter in their own band who writes their own songs, but they also like to record themselves performing other people’s songs for practice.  Then they upload them on to their Facebook page so that anyone can listen to their music and so that they can get some feedback.  One day they notice a great song you have written and take it without your permission and perform it and then they put it on their Facebook page.

You want to (respectfully) help them to understand why this was wrong and even illegal.

What will you say to them?

Writing Situation:

Write a one-paragraph blog to your friend explaining why uploading recordings of other people’s songs is wrong and illegal unless you get their permission.  In your explanation, be sure to explain how this type of “sharing” affects the original song writer and singing artist.  End by encouraging them to use their own music and why that would be appropriate.

    Dear Friend,
I just thought I would stop to remind you that the uploading of my song is illegal. This is not helping the sales of my song and its allowing me to potentally loose a lot of money. I know that if any other artists found out about you they would be a lot more upset than i am. I would greatly appreciate it if you would just play your music, because i know that your fans love the music you’ve written on your own.
    Thanks,
    Evan

    dear friend,
you really shouldnt steal other peoples songs because it is illegal to use other peoples songs that they created.Think about if you made a great song and some great singer stole it and turned it into a great hit.

Uploading recordings of other peoples songs is wrong unless you have their permission to do it. Singing someone elses song and posting it on the internet without the original writers permission could get the person mad. If you wrote a song and someone else sang it and posted it on a website without your permission you would get mad too. Every song that is written is automatically copy righted unless you get their permission. So next time either ask their permission or start writing your own songs so you can post it on the web without getting youself in any trouble.

    Hey Kidd,
I saw the videos you put on myspace! I hope you asked the artists permision to sing their siongs. Because i think that singin their songs and posting it on the internet is illegal. If i were you I would hurry and take them off the internet or you can be arrested.

    Dear Smitty,\
I know it is hard to understand but uploading songs is wrong and illegal.
The problem is that without permission it is not fair. The writer of that song is not getting paid when you do that. So please keep sharing your own music. And don`t upload music.

I saw the recordings that you did online. You have a really great band, but uploading recordings of other people’s songs is wrong and illegal unless you ask for permission. It is not fair for the song writer and singer if you use their song. They worked hard for those songs. The singer and the song writer gets paid for those songs. When they are used illegally, they don’t earn any money. So instead of using other people’s song, you should record the songs that you wrote. I’m sure they’re really great. You’ll sound more original if u rcord your own song. You never know! Your songs might become famous.

Hey! I know you like my song and you sang it really good but it’s my song because I wrote it. So if you could take it off your myspace that would be great. I don’t want to be mean or anything but what you did was illegal. I wrote the song so you need to pay for it if you want it.

    Thanks!

Excellent job! You were to the point and decisive.

    Dear Friend,
I know that you like my song enough to record it and put it on your Myspace, but by doing that you are breaking the law. You took my work and put in on the internet as yours and that is a wrong thing to do. Please take the song off your Myspace and only record your work. Thank you.

Well written. You clearly defined what was the correct thing to do and what to do to correct the situation.

    Dear friend,

I saw you put my song on myspace, and I am upset. You know thats illegal, right? You can’t copy other peoples work and put ’em up like they’re yours- That is NOT cool. I’m really ticked off at you, because it looks like your work. Ask next time, and post my name when its up- But for now, you should DEFINATLY take that video down.

You were direct but not rude. Thanks for taking the time to put this in writing.

    Dear friend,
I just thought i would tell you that you can’t upload my song to your profile without my permission. I love the idea of your band performing my song but you have to ask me. By copywrite law you can’t use any ideas unless they are your’s or you have permission. It is illegal, so next time please ask

    Dear friend,

i noticed that you put the song that i wrote and upload it onto facebook. I am very upset and that little stunt you pulled is illegal, u could go to jail for that. Next time ask me before putting it on to facebook. but for now u have to put that song down.

    Dear friend,

I noticed you used my song on facebook. Did you no that’s illegal? Well it is ,because you are using someone elses work, you are breaking the law when you are doing this and you could possibly go to jail. I think you should use your own work because when your making alot of money you you no you earned it yourself and without anyone elses help. If you want to use my song make sure you ask me and with my permission you are allowed to use it. So just remember that copying someones work is illegal.

    Dear friend,
I saw that you put my song on your facebook page and you prefomed it, I am kind of mad because u didn’t ask. and you know that it is also illigle, right? well if you didn’t know it is. And I know that you do that with other peoples songs to and that is not good. you could pay a big fine or go to jail for this. so please stop and please take my song of your facebook page.
    Thanks.

    Dear Freind,
I have noticed that you have put up one of my songs on your facebook. I would really like it if you took it off. You did not ask me for my permision before you put it up, which is illegal. Please try to take it off as soon as possible and mabye you could ask me for permision and then you could put it up.

    Dear Friend,

I observed that you preformed my own written song on Facebook. I am rapturous that you like my song, and I am pretty certain that other people enjoyed the lyrics that I wrote and the song that you preformed. Were you informed in Computer Science class that copying others’ work can be punished by jail time? One woman was fined almost 2 millionn dollars because she copied only a sheer 28 songs off the internet. You are my friend, but I DO NOT WANT YOU TO COPY MY WORK EVER AGAIN! For one, it is wrong ethically, and you may be punished by the government, and secondly, you’re my friend, and friends don’t do that to each other. Please take that video of my song off, or you’ll suffer the consequences.

    Dear Friend,
I saw my song on your profile.I’m mad because I spent a lot of time on that, and you took it mixed it and said it was yours. Thats just not right and its also illegal. You can at least put me or my bands name by and say that we made it. But now don’t say its yours.

    Dear friends.
I’m enraged you your my song my permission.
You no you no permission to published it .

I noticed on your profile that you took my song that I made. Look this is illegal and you can get into alot of trouble. Also, I didn’t even give you any permission to use it. How would you like it if I took your music and publish it as mine. Now please take the video off your profile.

    Dear friend,

I noticed that you used one of the songs I made to make a myspace video. You should know that that is violating the copyright law and you should ask before you use my work. You need to take it
    off myspace.
